Description
The Martyrdom of Polycarp is an early Christian text that recounts the arrest, trial, and execution of Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, who was martyred around 155-160 CE. Polycarp was an influential figure in the early Christian church and a direct disciple of the Apostle John. The narrative is one of the most significant accounts of Christian martyrdom from the 2nd century.
The story begins with Polycarp’s arrest after he was denounced by a slave girl for being a Christian. Despite his age (he was in his 80s or 90s), he was apprehended and brought before the Roman authorities. The local proconsul, named Statius Quadratus, urged Polycarp to renounce his faith and swear allegiance to the emperor, calling for him to curse Christ. Polycarp famously replied, “Eighty and six years have I served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”
