Description
The Martyrdom of Polycarp is an early Christian text that details the arrest, trial, and execution of Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, who was martyred around 155-160 CE. A key figure in the early Christian church and a direct disciple of the Apostle John, Polycarp’s martyrdom is one of the most significant accounts of Christian faith and perseverance from the 2nd century.
The story begins with Polycarp’s arrest, prompted by a slave girl’s denunciation of him as a Christian. Despite his advanced age—he was in his 80s or 90s—he was captured and brought before the Roman authorities. The local proconsul, Statius Quadratus, urged Polycarp to renounce his faith and pledge allegiance to the emperor, demanding that he curse Christ. Polycarp famously responded, “Eighty and six years have I served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”
