Description

Initially trained at Oxford University, Whitefield became friends with John and Charles Wesley, founders of Methodism. Though he later parted ways with them doctrinally, his ministry shared similar emphases on personal salvation and the need for spiritual rebirth. Whitefield’s sermons focused on the necessity of a personal conversion experience and were marked by emotional intensity, which helped him gain a wide following across both the American colonies and Britain.

His travels across the Atlantic, where he made multiple preaching tours, established him as a transatlantic figure and a key figure in the spread of evangelicalism. Whitefield was instrumental in shaping evangelical thought and in mobilizing lay people to become active participants in the religious revival. Despite facing criticism from some church leaders, his impact on religious practice and the development of Protestant evangelicalism was profound, leaving a lasting legacy in both England and America.
