Description
The Martyrdom of Polycarp is an early Christian text that recounts the death of Saint Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna, who was martyred around 155–160 CE. The narrative offers a vivid portrayal of Polycarp’s steadfast faith during a time of Roman persecution against Christians.
The story begins with increasing pressure from the Roman authorities to suppress Christianity. Polycarp, who was a revered figure and believed to be a disciple of the Apostle John, is arrested for refusing to renounce his faith and worship the emperor. Despite efforts to persuade him to abandon his beliefs, Polycarp refuses to offer sacrifices to the emperor or declare him a god.
When brought before the Roman proconsul, Polycarp is given a chance to save his life by swearing an oath of loyalty to the emperor and making an offering. Polycarp’s famous response is, “For eighty and six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong; how can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” His refusal to compromise angers the proconsul, who sentences him to be burned alive.
