Description
The Martyrdom of Polycarp is an early Christian text that recounts the death of Saint Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna, who was martyred between 155 and 160 CE. It provides a powerful depiction of Polycarp’s unwavering faith during a period of intense Roman persecution of Christians.
The narrative begins with rising pressure from Roman authorities to suppress Christianity. Polycarp, a deeply respected leader and believed to be a disciple of the Apostle John, is arrested for refusing to renounce his faith or worship the emperor. Despite repeated attempts to persuade him to abandon his beliefs, he steadfastly refuses to offer sacrifices to the emperor or acknowledge him as a deity.
When Polycarp is brought before the Roman proconsul, he is offered a chance to save his life by swearing loyalty to the emperor and making a symbolic offering. His famous reply is: “For eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” This defiant declaration enrages the proconsul, who orders that Polycarp be burned alive.
The account highlights Polycarp’s courage and devotion, serving as an enduring testament to faith in the face of persecution.
